Prof. Walter Mwanda is a researcher and a professor of pathology at the University of Nairobi, department of human pathology (Haematology and blood transfusion unit). He holds a bachelor’s degree in Medicine (MBCHB) from the University of Nairobi, Post-Graduate course in Epidemiology and Biostatistics in Clinical Epidemiology and Bio statistics from John Hopkins University, Maryland, USA and Doctor of medicine subject of oncology and many other postgraduate qualifications in pathology and haematology. Until recently, Prof. Mwanda was the director of the University of Nairobi Institute of Tropical and Infectious Diseases (UNITID).

Currently he is a lecturer, as well as head of paediatric oncology, consultant on blood transfusion to the national, largest, referral and teaching hospital in Kenya. He is a mentor and researcher in oncology. He has held several positions including: in charge Paediatric oncology since 1994 to date and head of Kenya Cancer Association. Member of several oncology groups AORTIC, Kenya Society for Haematology Oncology, Kenya Cancer Association, South African Paediatric Oncology Study Group, Pan Africa Psycho Oncology Society.

Published over 50 papers in peer reviewed journals of which 45 are on oncology. Also co-author of, International Atlas of AIDS 4th Edition, Kaposi’s sarcoma, cancers in Kenya oncogenesis, synopsis of management of Paediatric cancers in Kenya. Special topics Burkitt’s lymphoma and HIV related malignancies. Career objective is to have University of Nairobi - Kenyatta National Hospital Cancer management Centre of excellence.
